Creating Innovative music through South Asian and Western traditions across East Lancashire.

Why did you set up Dhamak?

At the time there was no music service in Burnley and there was a clear need for young people to have access to music provision. Also the South Asian music was brought in to help with community ohesion. We believe that anyone can express themselves through drumming - it's a very accessible form of music - and it's great fun!

What sort of work do you deliver?

All sorts! - Art forms have included drumming - both Dhol drumming and African drumming, music production, more general music, DJing, voice and singing. We work right across the ages from Nursery to 60+ and this includes offering CPD for teachers and arts professionals. This work may be delivered through a single session, or a series of wrokshops which lead to a performance - we are very flexible in our ways of working.

In our longer term work with schools we involve pupils in all sorts of performance opportunities which is great for their confidence and personal development. For example, this term we will be taking Year 10 & 11 pupils from colleges across Burnley to perform at Bradford Mela which is a really exciting opportunity.
