A Portrait of Burnley
Pippa Pixley
7 June - 25 July 2009
Never have two contemporaneous generations shared the same environment, yet inhabited such wildly different worlds, as the young and the old of the early 21st Century.
This collection of images taken in various locations in the town of Burnley during Spring 2009 naturally focuses on the polarised extremes of the young and the old, their diverse experiences, and their points of interaction. The physical environment has been altered in many ways since the old were young, and yet much remains unchanged: terraced rows, remnants of the mills, the parks, the canal, the weather. Meanwhile, our society has embraced new cultures and technologies.
Local artist and photographer, Pippa Pixley, is drawn to these two key groups, capturing the essence of their existences in a simple manner, reliant only on available natural light to illuminate her subjects.
Further work in this series will be on display at Towneley Hall, Burnley from Saturday 4th July 2009. To learn more visit www.pippapixley.co.uk
