Talking Shop: Project Pride Burnley

Prince Charles in Victoria Mill, enjoying the performance by the Project Pride Burnley team!
With generous support from Heritage Lottery Fund Young Roots programme, we worked with artists and groups of young people to research and interpret the heritage of the Weavers' Triangle area in Burnley for the local community.
In 2011 theatre practitioner Paul Hine and filmmaker Gino Evans recently brought to life the heritage of the Weavers’ Triangle with a piece of unique multi-media site-specific promenade theatre. Young people from Blessed Trinity RC College and Burnley Youth Theatre worked together to set the scene, and transported audiences back in time with smoke, mirrors, and even some more modern technology...! There is a documentary of the project available via Vimeo here.
Through finding out about the history of their town the young people leading the project wanted to explore what made their area unique and encourage the community to celebrate their heritage.
A week-long series of research visits, workshops and rehearsals culminated with performances on Saturday 20th August 2011 in an empty Mill building off Trafalger Street in Burnley. You can read the project blog here: http://burnleyis.wordpress.com/ and a documentary of the project will also be online soon.
The group were also invited to perform an extract from the piece for Prince Charles when he visited Burnley in October 2011. As you can see from the photo, he certainly seemed to enjoy it!
During the research for the performance we asked the people of Burnley what 'Burnley Is' to them - watch this film to see what they said: http://vimeo.com/29275373
Huckleberry Films also worked with us to produce a documentary about all the Project Pride activity which took place across Accrington, Nelson and Burnley, which you can view here.
